Movies on airplanes are difficult. Unless someone has bought you a seat with a giant screen, you’ll be watching the movie in cattle class on a five inch screen or looking upwards somewhere down the aisle, at a small old fashioned television that still runs on VHS. I saw this movie on the (very) small screen and found it most amusing. It surprised me.

This movie fails for all the reasons Love Actually worked. It’s all about how the characters bond and how they evolve their stories with each other. With a cast list like this has, you’d expect great results. Unfortunately, it’s bland and we don’t really care about the people involved.

In 1987, obese, illiterate, 16-year-old Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) lives in Harlem with her dysfunctional mother, Mary (Mo'Nique). She has been impregnated twice by her father, Carl, and suffers long term physical and mental abuse from her unemployed mother. The family resides in a Section 8 tenement and subsists on welfare. Her first child, known only as "Mongo" (short for "Mongoloid"), has Down syndrome and is being cared for by Precious' grandmother.

First the bad news; you can’t possibly make a biopic of The Runaways and expect it to come in at under ten hours. The good news is that screenplay writer Floria Sigismondi uses slices of the girls’ hectic four years as a band to show us what life was like, as a Runaway.

You know you're in Hollywood territory when you're guessing the twist to this movie from the very first minute. Unfortunately, I guessed correctly, as did the majority of the audience. What's important is that in speculating the twist, it didn't destroy the enjoyment of the movie. The second twist wasn’t so obvious, but when you know the first twist, they do match.

It's difficult to get excited about a movie expected to provide fast high class-action, but fails miserably in delivering soft, feeble action sequences. The saving grace is provided by the extremely talented actress; Ellen Page.

It plays out like a documentary, but it’s a fictionalized account of some real events in Iraq. The attention to detail is incredible showing that quality research is essential in movie making. It keeps your interest rate high throughout, never allowing you to dismiss the high element of fear in the daily lives of these army bomb disposal experts; not a role we’d all take on with relish.
