Blank canvas and writer’s block

Screenplay

It’s great having writer’s block when you want to start designing your next film. You have a great big blank sheet of paper (or computer screen). You have nothing to stop you from writing anything.

Writing anything is a good way forward. You need to brainstorm all of your ideas. You can brainstorm by yourself. The way you brainstorm is important. Just look out of the window for ideas or just go into town, sit outside a coffee shop and watch the world go by; the ideas are passing you by in their millions.

Write down all you can – the more you write, the more you’ll be able to erase later and the more you’ll have left. The beter film you’ll make and the better movie you’ll market.

Don’t decide if you’re writing down a good idea or a poor one. You haven’t time to decide about what you’ve written, it’s just important to write.

Let your mind wander. You might see people walking into a bank. Write it down. You might think of a bank robbery. Write it down. Let your mind wander further. You might see an alien spaceship land on top of the bank. Think what a five year old might think and see. The world is different in so many ways in which we can look at it. If you don’t want to write about a bank robbery, you might turn the bank into a homeless person’s shelter. Just write.

When you’ve filled your page(s) have a look through and see what appeals to you. You can combine ideas; you might have a play park and a car park written down. What can happen between those two locations? If you have a young child written down somewhere else, could the child be kidnapped between the car park and the play park? Just use your imagination and let it flow. See what associations come from what you’ve written on your (former) blank sheet of paper.

What you write will start your next film making project.

Now what shall we write on our blank canvas?
