Scream 4 (2011 movie)

25. August 2011

Yet another successful movie in the Scream series, but that should finally bring an end to the franchise. It’s been good and we don’t need another to leave it on a high. What’s good about Scream 4, like the first three, is that they’re not at all scary and although the screen is filled with fake blood, the actual murders are not filmed in graphic detail? So what’s it all about?

The Beaver (2011 movie)

23. August 2011

Describing this movie to another, you’d probably impede their chances of seeing The Beaver with Jodie Foster as the drama easily exceeds the logline. Excellent acting was needed to fight poor publicity when the movie was released with the publicity winning through, which is a shame as many millions will miss this treat.

Being a sucker for talking animal movies, Zookeeper provides simple fun for the whole family mixing some amusement with a tradition love story. The man gets the girl after not knowing she’s the right girl for him while he chases the wrong girl. The animals get to play lead roles and generally run the whole show.

How can it be that the Bridesmaids’ screenplay is funnier than the finished movie? The screenplay loses a lot between the page and the screen, while still proving to be one of the better films of this genre in 2011. So what’s it all about?

You might feel you understand what’s going on during the opening scenes of Sucker Punch. After ten minutes you’ll pose the famous American saying: ‘WTF?’ Less than two hours later and a few more ‘what the flips,’ it’ll all make sense, but you’ll wonder why, when you saw the trailer, did this diverse movie arrive in front of you? So what’s it all about?

After.Life (2009 movie)

7. June 2011

The premise for After.Life is different as we see the living talking to the dead as they move though the next world between the moment of death and their funeral. Religious groups should be up in arms over this movie, but alas, the ending is so fragile and obvious that you wished they’d chosen any of the other available options.

Paul (2011 movie)

An excellent inspiration; Paul is an unusual switch on the customary stories of people meeting aliens and making friends. This alien smokes, uses bad language and still manages to deliver a full character that leaves ET behind.

London Boulevard (2010 movie)

20. May 2011

Given the incredible cast list, it’s no surprise the acting seen in London Boulevard is way up there with the best. Keira Knightley, in particular, has a screen presence similar to Liz Burton, Audrey Hepburn and so on. Having sat through this meandering movie, you wouldn’t be surprised to see Guy Ritchie as the director, but he’s not, William Monahan taking the reins.

Hanna (2011 movie)

The co-operation of this UK/US/German movie is clear as we have an interesting, thought provoking movie as opposed to the usual lacklustre comedies or just blow anything up that Hollywood believes we want to see these days. Hanna is both spine tingling and character rewarding. If screenwriting school needs a script to study, then this is it.
