You have to buy into the concept of the movie and relate to the characters to ‘care’ what happens to them and the outcome of the movie. With Inception, I found I didn’t care about either despite the excellent special effects and the wonderful acting.

So what’s it all about?

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

The first word has to go to the special effects; they are quite tremendous and almost set a new standard. You can see where they spent the money. Christopher Nolan and his music writer Hans Zimmer have set a pattern that depicts a ‘C Nolan’ movie.

The second word must go to the screenplay. This shows either an extremely vivid imagination or a long spell on LSD from the late 1960’s. We’ll guess the former as Mr Nolan expresses a certain style. The story is difficult to follow in the beginning which is why they spend a long time giving all the necessary information which is all explained by the end of the movie.

Leonardo DiCaprio has proved time and time again that he has acting quality up there with the best and of course he gets to work here with two of the best, Ellen Page and Michael Caine. They bounce off each other so well that they are totally believable in their roles.

The enormous budget allocated for this film has already been surpassed by over US$100 million in its first couple of weeks. DVD sales will certainly boost that by a few million more.

I’ve read online, elsewhere, explanations about some of the action in this film. Obviously I did miss some major items; but was I dreaming?

The film is far from perfect in a narrative sense. It would seem the special effects and dreams within dreams serve equally to beguile the audience, a magician-like misdirection to distract from plot holes and weak motivating factors.
    “Following”s Cobb was more intriguing.
