Movies on airplanes are difficult. Unless someone has bought you a seat with a giant screen, you’ll be watching the movie in cattle class on a five inch screen or looking upwards somewhere down the aisle, at a small old fashioned television that still runs on VHS. I saw this movie on the (very) small screen and found it most amusing. It surprised me.

So what’s it all about?

Georgia (Nia Vardalos) is a Greek American tour guide who is leading a tour around Greece with an assorted group of misfit tourists who would rather buy a T-shirt than learn about history and culture. In a clash of personalities and cultures, everything seems to go wrong, until one day when older traveller Irv Gordon (Richard Dreyfuss), shows her how to have fun, and to take a good look at the last person she would ever expect to find love with: her Greek bus driver (Alexis Georgoulis)

This movie surprised me because I usually avoid this type of movie. You know the sort; the trailer has all the best parts and then you only chuckle. You know the movie will be a waste of ninety minutes of your life. While it wasn’t the funniest movie I’ve ever seen, it did give me quite a few laughs and that was without using the airplane’s alcoholic benefits.

Although the script was quite obvious, it did use good comic timing to relay events and kept full interest right through to the end.

Nia Vardalos was funny (I’m told) in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and in these Ruins, she moves a little down the road. She wrote the movie with Mike Reiss and then took the starring role.

Okay, I’ll watch it again on a full size screen and see if I feel the same about it.
