TREATMENTS (Features, 30-Minute Sitcoms, 60-Minute Dramas) are super easy to create & write. Now, since you have 7-10 great ideas I ask you, “Why haven’t you written 5-7 Great Treatments?”…then and only then you will own something. But first, However, there are 2 rules for writers & writing, and you are about to stop talking and start writing and to be a writer the two rules are…
1) Nothing is Written, it’s Re-Written
2) There’s only 1 way to write…Move your Frickin’ fingers
The saying with Studio execs, who you are hoping someday might hire you, is that “WRITERS WRITE and THINKERS THINK” and they want to hire (A) Writers but you are a (B) Thinker… then guess what? You ain’t gonna get hired…. So let’s start moving your fingers.
It only takes about 3-4 hours to write a treatment and this is “so-nothing” when you have been thinking this amazing idea for 2-3 years…. Again, So let’s start moving your fingers.
Your First Question is always, “How long is a Treatment?”
Answer is no one knows! Is it 3-pages, 7-pages, 10-pages, 20-pages, 30-pages? I don’t know. No one knows. All that I do know is that less than 3-pages doesn’t seem to be long enough to establish story & characters, so you can own something, and more than 30-pages is starting to get to long.
Thus, a Treatment appears to be somewhere between 3-30 pages…and the 3-30 pages are double spaced typing.
Hope that didn’t come out to negative or arrogant but this thing called “Hollywood” and this industry called “Filmmaking” is massively profitable but it is an industry for doers not thinkers and not talkers…and to be a doer the next time you have an idea (aka: thought) you must instantly sitdown for 2-3 hours and write a Treatment…welcome to Hollywood…the world needs doers…now move your fingers.
