DP Wolfgang Held on Using Documentary Shooting Techniques on “Sophie and the Rising Sun”

Emmy Award winning director of photography Wolfgang Held has worked in New York City since the late 1990s. During his career, he has assembled and extensive filmography in both documentary and narrative genres. He has photographed feature films for directors Larry Charles and Sacha Baron Cohen, Maggie Greenwald, Rob Morrow, Mitchell Lichtenstein, and the late Gary Winick, as well as feature documentaries for filmmakers Nanette Burstein, Susan Froemke, Joe Berlinger, Marilyn Agrelo, Dan Klores, and Madeleine Sackler among many others. Most recently, Held put his emphasis on photographing socially minded films and TV shows such as “The Lottery,” “Escape Fire,” “Half the Sky,” “A Path Appears,” “Years of Living Dangerously,” and “Far from the Tree.”

“Sophie and the Rising Sun” is a 2016 American drama film written and directed by Maggie Greenwald. It is based on the 2001 novel Sophie and the Rising Sun by Augusta Trobaugh. The film stars Julianne Nicholson, Takashi Yamaguchi, Margo Martindale, Diane Ladd, Lorraine Toussaint and Karen Wheeling Reynolds.

“Sight Sound and Story” is an annual event presented by Manhattan Edit Workshop that brings audiences “behind the scenes” with legends of visual storytelling.
