Want to learn how to give your video that ‘Cinematic Look’?
In this tutorial we look at the first step of making your footage look epic – Colour Correction.
Why is colour correction so important? Think of it as painting the undercoat that you are applying to your footage so it is ready to receive the final cinematic colour.
Colour Correction is the process of resolving any colour issues with your footage.
This includes things like
– Ensuring the footage is properly exposed
– Fixing up any white balancing issues
– Fixing up colour mismatches between consecutive clips
Almost every video editing or visual effects compositing software has tools to work with and correct the colour of your clips.
In Adobe After Effects, the main tools I like to use is the Levels and the Curves effect.
In Adobe Premiere, my first stop to fixing any colour issues with my footage is the Fast Color Corrector. I usually apply the RGB Curves effect after the Fast Colour Corrector to add some contrast back into my footage and make it ‘pop’ a little bit more.
There are lots of different tools available and I encourage you to try them out to learn what they do and how you can use them to resolve any colour issues with your video.

In the next tutorial we will look at the second step to achieving a cinematic look – Colour Grading.
