‘Parasite’ becomes first S. Korean film to win Golden Globe

영화 ‘기생충’ 한국영화 최초 골든글로브상 수상 쾌거
The 77th Golden Globe Awards ceremony has just taken place in Los Angeles. And among the winners was South Korean film ‘Parasite’, which won Best Foreign Language Film, making it the first ever South Korean film to win a Golden Globe.
To hear more about that we have our Lee Min-sun on the line. Min-sun, it’s quite an accomplishment both for Bong Joon-ho and the South Korean film industry.

Hi Jiyoon,
That’s right. ‘Parasite’ once again wrote history by becoming the first South Korean film to win a Golden Globe.
Before ‘Parasite’, no other South Korean film had even been nominated for a Golden Globe and ‘Parasite’ has changed the history of the South Korean film industry which marked its 100th year anniversary last year.
‘Parasite’ was nominated for three categories: Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film.
Many film critics and media outlets had been quite certain about ‘Parasite’ winning more than one award at the Golden Globes. The New York Times and the LA Times both said they expected ‘Parasite’ to win at least two Golden Globes.
Amazing and unbelievable. That’s what director Bong said after receiving the Best Foreign Language Film award. He added it was a huge honor to be nominated along with fellow amazing international filmmakers and said once audiences overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, they will be introduced to so many more amazing films.

We’ve been seeing ‘Parasite’ get plenty of praise from international film festivals and film critics associations. What were some noteworthy awards and what is left to look out for?

In May 2019, ‘Parasite’ became the first South Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. And that was just the beginning. The black comedy has picked up awards from film critics associations including the Best Film award from the L.A. Film Critics Association, and the Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film from the San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle.
And the most recent additions are the Best Picture and Best Screenplay awards from the U.S.-based National Society of Film Critics over the weekend and the Best Picture from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards.
All of these are paving way for a possible win at the Oscars which will also be another unprecedented achievement for a South Korean film.
‘Parasite’ has been selected as South Korea’s entry in the category of Best International Feature Film and for Best Original Song at the upcoming Academy Awards in February.
The final nominations will be announced next week, and critics have been saying ‘Parasite’ could even be nominated for Best Picture and Best Director.
That’s all I have at this hour Ji-yoon.
