SHOWEST AWARDS
Anne Hathaway and Robert Downey Jr. took top honours at the ShoWest Awards held in Las Vegas Thursday night. Each year, the ceremony marks the close of ShoWest, an annual movie-theatre owners convention.
Hathaways’ credits range from “The Princess Diaries” to “The Devil Wears Prada” to the upcoming “Get Smart.”
Veteran actor Downey Jr., who will be seen this summer in both the superhero movie “Iron Man” and the comedy “Tropic Thunder” took a different tack. Upon receiving his award, Downey Jr., whose battle with sobriety has played out in public, quoted New York’s scandalised Governor Elliot Spitzer, saying, “I go forward with the belief, as others have said, that as human beings our greatest glory consists not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.”
Sarah Jessica Parker took home ShoWest’s Vanguard Award, noting, “I’m actually confounded as to why I’m the recipient of this inaugural Vangaurd Award, but I’m extremely flattered.” Parker’s “Smart People” opens soon, while “Sex and the City” is coming to the big screen this May.
Brendan Fraser was in Vegas promoting both “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D” and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” and picked up the Distinguished Decade of Achievement in Film Award. “It’s been a diverse, interesting ride,” he said.
“Little Miss Sunshine” Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin was named Female Star of Tomorrow. “I’m encouraged by this award, and I promise to try my best at every role that I get,” she exclaimed. Breslin next can be seen in “Smart People” and “Nim’s Island.”
And Emile Hirsch, soon to be seen in summer’s “Speed Racer,” was given the trophy for Male Star of Tomorrow. Since it was his 23rd birthday, the band struck up “Happy Birthday” as the “Into the Wild” actor walked to the stage.
