Rock Climbing Techniques—Knots and harness for beginners (feat. Adam Ondra)

Adam Ondra is a world class rock climbing champion. His techniques have won him medals in both bouldering and lead climbing. In this video, he explains why it is important to have trust in the person who is on the other end of the rope: the belayer.

After watching Ondra send an inverted rock face in this video, climbers demonstrate the most fundamental of all rock climbing techniques that every beginner needs to know: how to get into a harness and tie both a single and double eight knot.

In this video, you will learn:

How to properly put on a harness —First, place it on the ground. Then step into it. Finally, pull it up over your legs and into position, making sure that it is not twisted.

How to tie a single eight knot — This is a simple knot that most beginner climbers can pick up after practicing just a few times. Use the story to help you remember: “First make the monkey’s head, then strangle it, then poke it through the eye and tighten it!”

How to tie a double eight knot — After you’ve threaded the long end of your rope as shown through your harness, use the free end of the rope to “trace” the single eight knot and make it a double. Then pull every end of the rope individually to tighten.
