Spires’ film, The Whale, follows a young boy who lives in an ephemeral fantasy to try and escape the cycle of paternal abuse.

About Film Making
“Cinematography is all about storytelling. All the way, 100%. If telling a story is your one true goal as cinematographer, everything else will follow. The light and glass and stock one uses are only means to an end, which should be a story worth telling.”

Style and Lighting
“To me The Whale is all about cycles and perpetuation, so it was of utmost importance to us to reflect these themes in the cinematography. Choices such as limiting lens choice to 2 lenses, repeating specific camera moves across scenes, and naturalistic lighting were all made to simply serve the story. The story itself is one of tragedy and beauty, and I only hope that such tragedy and beauty is felt through the cinematography of The Whale.”
